Another Month Gone + No More Garcinia Gambogia

Well, another month has slipped into the past. or where ever it goes. I'm not sure about parallel universes just yet.

I decided to quit the garcinia gambogia. I don't need it. I'm not the pill popping kind of guy. In fact it made me very nervous, and I've got enough anxieties already. It also made me hungry, which really isn't a problem for me any longer. It's advocates claim it takes away your food cravings. It did the exact opposite for me. That's after only two weeks. I can make it through the day without constantly going to the cupboard or the fridge.

I want to meet some of these people who have taken it, and had these "amazing results." I'm like my wife Geraldine, a skeptic.

Dr. Oz, who is promoting this product, says, "It's not a substitute for a good healthy diet and exercise." Then why champion it? Why not champion a healthy lifestyle instead of a pill. I'll take Richard Simmons over the great and powerful Oz. Sweat it out baby.

Let's say for a minute that it does burn fat and lowers your cholesterol like it claims. Does it also clean out your arteries, and your liver. The serious problem I see here is that people are going to keep on eating an unhealthy diet of food, and any way you cut the mustard that's a recipe for a heart attack, garcinia gambogia or no garcinia gambogia.

We have to make the time in our schedules to do the hard work. We need a well balanced variety of protein, fruits and vegetables in our diets, not a double double from In and Out Burger and a chaser of garcinia gambogia. It's akin to "You don't need to protect yourself against STD's. Hey, if you get aids, all you need is a nice cocktail of drugs every day and you can live forever. Can't get old glory up any more, have a little blue pill.

I'll substitute a hike with my wife and the dogs v.s. garcinia gambogia, a block of cheese and a wide screen TV any day. Fucking gimmicks.

That's it.

Running Smooth

Life is going along rather smoothly I'm happy to say. I've settled in a comfortable eating pattern that seems to be working for me, finally. There are and will be more "slips",  but this is not a strain for me any longer. I will always have to be conscious of what I put in the old pie hole. The days of unabashed oral food orgies are numbered.

Geri and I were on our nightly constitutional this evening when she posed the question, "Wouldn't it be funny if you became an anorexic?" My reply was, "I thought of that myself just today, but then dismissed it because I loved food too much, and always will." And it's true. In fact this whole process of changing my relationship with food has made me appreciate and love food even more.

At 60 the consequences of bad choices are more potent than ever.

Today was a beautiful day in Oakland.

That's it.

Herbs and Corn

The herb garden is doing great, and at this rate we will have to plant at least two crops of herbs this season, maybe three before the rains come again. Good thing pesto freezes.

Corn is already in season and we have been grilling a mess of it already this summer. The vegetables and fruit at the market right now is amazing.

Very busy day today.

That's it.

Memorial Day & Fasting

It was a nice weekend spent close to home.

I have nothing but respect for the people who have chosen to serve their country. Of course when I was young I got in quite a bit trouble, and it was brought up that maybe the service would be good for me. A Marine recruiter pointed out to me that it wasn't weather military service was good for me, it was weather or not I was good enough for the service. Or in the immortal words of JFK, "Ask not what your country can do for your, but what you can do for your country. Not going in the service is what I did for America. We are all better off as a result of that fact.

Sleep tight America. I'm not on the job.

That's it.

Ice Cream + Memorial Day + The John Buchard Syndrome

I broke down and had some ice cream last night. The craving was so intense I just had to give in. I have watermelon in the fridge, which I had earlier in the day, but I had to have ice cream.

There's a scene in the movie Down By Law, where Roberto Bertolini, Tom Waits, and John Laurie from the band Austin Lounge Lizards, are in the Parish Prison in New Orleans and they're yelling
"ice cream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream." That's kinda how I felt last night. I ate 3/4 of a  a pint of bittersweet chocolate by the Three Twins. It is addictive for sure. Had to have it, gave in to temptation. So much for the benefits of fasting. Whatever benefit I did derive from fasting yesterday was negated by the 4 million calories of ice cream I consumed. Ice cream is the perfect combination of salt, sugar and fat. Of course today I felt guilty. Well, I haven't had a beer in two weeks.

Memorial Day weekend and I'm staying close to home. It's another amateur weekend. Too many people on the road, with too much alcohol in them, and not enough drunk driving experience. Of course New Years Eve is the grand daddy of amateur night, followed by Memorial Day and July 4th.

Memorial Day is of course the holiday we celebrate to honor our brothers and sisters who have given the ultimate sacrafice for our country and wall street. Read Labors Untold Story if you want the real truth about America.

I went to the bathroom this morning trying to hock up a loogie I had lodged somewhere in my throat and strained my neck from coughing it up. Now I have no range of motion, and it's very uncomfortable, painful actually. I call it the John Buchard syndrome, for an old boss of mine. I worked for John for 3 seasons building driveways, and landscaping. we were good friends and we spent time fishing, hunting, eating, having fun, fighting, and drinking a lot. I learned a lot about construction from John.

John and his wife Florence were both old French Yankee farm kids way up near Lake Champlain Vermont. "Eleven miles to Canada as the crow flies." John would say. He and Florence spoke French as their first language. They had three girls. When you pissed him off he'd start swearing in French. That's when you knew when to back off. He was a tough farm boy, and a man you did not want to cross. He had a habit of busting peoples spleens. If he put you in a bear hug you might be visiting the hospital. He also had a reputation up north as being the toughest man around. No body at the firehouse in that neck of the woods could beat him in a fist fight. John was about 6 feet tall. He had a massive belly that was as solid as concrete, huge meaty hands with long fingers, and a thick healthy blue grey head of hair with streaks of white frost in it. He had a funny accent, and a wonderful charming smile.

One day John and I were working on a job site somewhere in Wilton CT. He was on the bulldozer back-grading this driveway, and I was working some rocks out by hand when he stopped to help me with this rock that I couldn't budge. As he steps off the dozer onto the ground his back went out, and I start laughing. He was 40 years old at the time and I was maybe 22. He looked at me with these dead  serious eyes and said "You wait, you'll be like me before you know it."

Every time something like this happens to me now I call it the John Buchard syndrome. It's a good excuse to finish the bitter sweet chocolate ice cream from the Three Twins. Pain killer.

That it.

Boring Blogging

That's what this blog can be and life in general, boring. I have nothing to write about. I ate some happy chocolate today, you know, Alice. Maybe that's why I'm bored. She hasn't been in my life since Saturday. In fact when Alice is present I don't have hunger pangs. She has the opposite effect on me than she does on other people.

I'm tired from walking dogs all day and hungry, as it is a fast day.

I have found myself eating fruit and nuts on fasting days which technically means I'm not fasting. Maybe it's not sustainable? I have to make my blue agave drink. Maybe it's reassessment time.

Tomorrow is another day. The chocolate helps.

That's it.

School + Tea V.S Coffee

School is over. I showed my teacher my video project, and I'm done for this semester. I only take classes for pass/no pass. I don't care about grades.

I've been drinking coffee more often lately, and I don't like it. I haven't had any black tea in the house, and I picked some up today, and that's it for me and the coffee. It's a nice treat once in a while after a good meal but I don't like the feeling it gives me, so no more.

Coffee is a very powerful food indeed and after gasoline it is the second most consumed product in the world. I would image tea is number three.

I continue to take the garcinia cambogia, but I don't fee any significant difference in weight loss or hunger levels. I still have food urges and I have to use the power of my will to overcome those. I will continue to take this product for the two months that I said I would and then we'll see.

My next weigh in is 5 weeks away when I hope to be close to 200 pounds. Till then I have a lot of work to do on curbing my unhealthy relationship with food. The beast is always at the door, always.

I have no other words to write today.

That's it.

What I Ate Today;

Breakfast; 1 piece of brown bread, 2 poached eggs w/s, p, and fresh chives, black coffee w/1 sugar,
                 1 potato pancake, 1 banana

Lunch; 1 piece of Italian chicken sausage, water melon, 3 pieces of salumi

School Days

Today is the last day of the school semester for me. I'm free again till the 3rd week in August. I have a video project to turn in, and then I'm out of there.

Richie Havens died yesterday of a heart attack at the age of 72, and Ray Manzarek of the Doors died over the weekend at the age of 74 from throat cancer. They both broke on through to the other side. At 60 I'm still a kid compared to them. I like that.

That's it.

Friday

I spent a couple of hours prepping for pizza tomorrow night, and prepping for pizza is fun for me. I'm going out for that hamburger that I've had a hankering for for so long. Tonight is the night. French fries too. I hope it doesn't do a number on my stomach.

I weighed myself this morning  after I got out of the shower, and I'm down to 210 pounds. I'm not going to weigh myself again till July 1st. At this rate I'll meet my projected goal at least 6 weeks ahead of time. I might make 190 pounds by my birthday with a little extra working out.

Thursday...fasting

Today is a fasting day, but I was hungry this morning even though I had that big bowl of pasta prima vera last night. I say if you're "starving" then eat something, something healthy, and that's exactly what I did this morning. I had a banana and yogurt, and then went for another walk.

I have to keep active if I'm going to make it through the change, and that is exactly what I intend to  do.

The walk takes my mind off all sorts of crap, and replaces that crap with some new crap that I made up on the walk.

That's it.

Garcinia Cambogia

LunchThe latest big news in weight loss therapy is what everyone has been looking for, a pill that helps fight weight gain and claims to assist in supressing  appetite. I went out today and bought a bottle of gardenia cambogia to do my own clinical trial.

Someone sent me a link to a Dr. Oz show about an Asian/India fruit extra that is all the rage these days. Needless to say I am skeptical about it's claims to reduce appetite, and prevent fat cells from forming. Supposedly this extract also targets the fat in the abdomen, which everyone knows is the hardest area to loose weight. It is for me.

The doctor that is championing this product is Dr. Julie Chen. She has done studies on real people, and swears by her findings. Dr Oz, the popular TV personality, seems to be impressed with the findings, and dedicated a whole show to the subject.

So, the link that I found that explains this newest weight loss fad is thegarciniacamogia.org. I will take the recommended dosage, 1000 mg, of this extract for two months everyday, and let you know the results.  Besides the 25 dollars it cost me I don't have much to loose by trying it. I will not change what has worked for me thus far. You still have to retrain the brain. According to Dr. Chen this product also does that as well. Again, not only am I skeptical, I don't believe it for a minute.

I must stress that I don't believe in quick fixes and snake oils. No matter who's selling them. I also strongly believe these quick remades can do much more harm to people than good. It's our nutritional habits, our relationship to food, and our addiction to processed fast foods as a nation that has to be changed.

My current weight is 215 pounds as of this morning. My monthly goal is 5 pounds weight loss. If this extract can help me do better than that in one month than I'll be on board the garcinia cambogia train.

That's it.

Peace,

Make Food/Not War

What I ate today;

Fasting + Sarah's Mac & Cheese

Today is a fast day. It's more or less routine at this point. I like fasting, and I actually look forward to it. It fits into my lifestyle quite easily. At this point it's not a big deal.

Dinner Saturday night was excellent. Sara and Ryan knocked it out of the ballpark. Sarah is my best friend Joe's daughter. I'm very proud of her, and I know Joe would be also. . I know her Mom Christine, my other best friend, is proud of her.

No big blogs today. No time

That's it.

Peace,

Make Food/Not War

What I ate today;
Breakfast; black tea with agave

Lunch...banana, orange juice

Dinner: Pan fried chicken w/s & p, peanut oil, collard greens, brown rice

Exercise; 6 miles walking

Sarah's Mac & Cheese (she never told me how much pasta or what type but it looked to be about a pound)

Here it is, in all it glory:
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
2 cups (warm) milk
2 cups grated cheddar (or any other cheese!) (I think this would be really good with part smoked gouda/part provolone or other white cheese too...)
1 cup grated SMOKED gouda- yum yum YUM
2 cloves roasted, smashed garlic
optional- about 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, sauteed in butter
salt, pepper, mustard powder and cayenne to taste
pasta :)

Boil water, add pasta, cook al dente- you know the drill. While that's happening:

Preheat oven to 350.
In a saucepan, melt butter, add flour to make a roux. immediately add roasted garlic, saute for about a minute (normally I also add onion, but I really wanted the focus to be on the garlic). Slowly add the slightly warmed milk, making sure to combine all the clumps. Bring to almost a boil, then start adding the CHEESE! Add slowly, letting it melt before you add more. Once all the cheese is added, I salt and pepper to taste, and a little mustard powder and cayenne for kick!
Finally, add this sauce mix to the drained pasta and coat evenly. Back in the saucepan, add about 1 tbsp butter to the pan, add the breadcrumbs and stir. Transfer the pasta to a baking dish, and spread the breadcrumb mixture on top.

Bake for about 20 minutes (its all hot anyway, right???) or until the breadcrumbs/top is browned to your liking.

THEN YOU GOBBLE IT!

Upside- Down Saturday

Geri made a pineapple upside down cake for dinner tonight with old friends in the city. This is such a beautiful cake. She added cherries of course and prunes. One of the things that reminds me of my mother that's similar about Geri is her love of prunes.

My mother made a prune cake that was her #1 signature dessert. I've only made it once or twice. When people hear the word prunes they freak-out. They think they'll have to go to the bathroom directly after eating a piece. My mother's was not as heavy as it sounds. The prunes are chopped up. It really was once of those dishes that you've had that are indescribable, because I've never had anything that tastes quite like that cake. I'll have to try and make it again, maybe in July. I got a couple of prune cake stories for another day.

The recipe for this upside-down cake is in the book Joy of Cooking, along with Geri's addition of the cherries, prunes, and finished off with whipped cream (my contribution). When all else fails go to the Joy of Cooking cookbook and you're safe.  I would venture to say that many a restaurant have been spawned from that one book alone. That's my tip for the week.

Technically this is not a blog day for me. Photo below.

That's it.

Have A Good Weekend

Another week bites the dust. Going to try and be a good boy this weekend. Best I can do. Movie night, the "The Sapphires",  with the wife. Very good.

My best friend's daughter Sara and her lover-boy Ryan are feeding myself, Geri, and other old friends from the 70's on Saturday. One of those people is my best friend joe's wife my Chris, my  and Sara's mom, and that is my big treat for the week. We are making dessert. More later.

Food and friends. There is nothing better.

That's It,

Peace,

Make Food/Not War

What I ate today;

Breakfast: 1/2 a potato friend pancake, S & P, olive oil, parsley, two poached eggs, 2 pieces organic brown bread w/apricot preserves, 1 1/2 cups black coffee

Lunch; nuts, orange juice

Dinner; Salad, same as yesterday, leftover pasta, popcorn at the movies, not butter

Exercise; 2 measly miles walking (I did a shit load of old man around the house little carpentry crap, probably ruined my back.

Shaky Thursday

I got shaky today, and I gave myself some protein and sugar i.e., 3 handfuls of nuts and a banana. It wasn't one of those food urges that you can cure with a pint of water, and go walk it off. It can get a little freaky when you get that shaky. Being shaky is not good, especially for an old man. I should have had some of my agave for the drop in blood sugar. I know for sure it was blood sugar for sure this time, and not just phony hunger pangs.

I still do not have an overwhelming desire for red meat, bread, (pizza is bread), cheese, or sugar.  There is a burger joint I've hearing about in Alameda that is supposedly one of the best places around, that I've been dying to visit. I look at foods and evaluate them on the health benefits. There's an occasional "binge" like Greek Easter, but I'm not going to beat myself up. I gave up guilt after I left Catholic school in 68'.  I had a piece of fruit the other day that sent me into orbit when I bit into it, and that's about as good as it gets. It was almost as good as a big slice of anchovy pie, or a bowl of pasta bolognese.

Speaking of pasta. I also recognize a pattern where I have pasta after a fast day. You know my take on pasta. It's my number one food after pizza. Italians live a long time, and they eat pasta everyday, often twice a day. I've been to Italy. I think I gained weight in Italy if I recall. I have a photo of me in Italy and my cheeks are the color of vino rosso.  I'll have to watch the pasta next time we go back, which hopefully will be sooner than later.

I've got nothing else to confess today. Tonight I'm making a cherry tomato past primavera with artichokes, broccoli, cauliflower, two type of chicken sausage, olive oil, white wine, basil, parsley, s & p, Romano cheese. The salad is dandilion greens, black olives of Provence, red bell peppers, cucumbers, goat feta cheese, s & p, champagne vinegar and olive oil from Sardina.

That's it. Ciao.

Blueberry, Banana, Walnut Muffins, + Greek Easter + Haircuts + Stats

It was a busy weekend. I got most of the herbs planted. I bought more basil, thyme, and 3 more tomato plants. I hope I don't regret buying the tomato plants. They have never worked out here.  There is not enough sun in our yard, but they have 5 months to grow.

The blueberry muffins on the other hand came out killer. The recipe is below.

May 5th, aka Greek Easter, aka Cinco de Mayo, was yesterday and we celebrated it in style again with our friends Charles, and Kathleen Cramer and a bunch of friends. Amazing food by Kathleen, lots of music, and good times with old acquaintances.

I gave my friend Michael a haircut this Saturday. He looks handsome.

Try this recipe, it rocks.

That's it.

3/4 cup granulated white sugar
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1 tsp lemon zest
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups blueberries

1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp nutmeg

Instructions;
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray muffin pan with non stick canola oil.

If you look below at the stats you'll see that I had a big breakfast this morning, no lunch, and a bowl of pasta for dinner. After I ate breakfast I went back to sleep. I had to take a nap.

Apparently it was too much food for me.

I went to Half Moon Bay and picked up Sugar Crow, down below.

Have a great weekend. Movie date night tonight.

Our Julia Child rose in the front yard is in full bloom. They smell as good as they look.

Have a wonderful weekend.

That's It.

Fire Season, Fasting, Stats

It was a 87 degrees today in Town. We missed the wild fires yesterday in Napa, but the smoke followed us back to Oakland. Wind, heat and fire are a bad combination. Flooding in the mid- west. With the smoke and the pollen in the air, and all the man made shit, the allergies are working overtime. On top of that it was downright hot today.

It is Thursday and that mean it's a fast day. I did have a banana and some watermelon this morning. Unless something prophetic happens between now and when I publish this blog it will be what you see here, and the daily journal stats.

I'm going to try and do blueberry muffins tomorrow, with a recipe. Another busy day then.

I made it through fast day.

That's it.

Peace,

Make Food/Not Wart

Napa + The Freemont Diner + Che & Frida & May Day

I took my friend Michael up to Napa to look for an apartment at this senior housing facility, and I don't think it's for him. It's scary what happens to us when we get old. It was a lovely outdated small studio apartment. I was clean and newly painted. You could get a small bed and a small desk in there, and that would have been about it. I just think he would be lonely there, and it's all white folks. No diversity in this place, just old and older.

We hightailed it out of there, and instead of taking highway 80 back across the Carquinez Bridge and Hwy. 580 back to Oaktown we decided to go Hwy. 12 to 116 to Petaluma, and we stopped at the Freemont diner in Sonoma.

Stopping here was the best decision we made all day. If you haven't been to this diner next time you're in a the area, and you need you're fill of comfort food, stop there. I got the muffaletta sandwich and fries. This is the second time I've had fries in 5 months, and it was worth the wait. Michael got the chicken BBQ sandwich, and he ate it all. He's a picky bastard if there ever was one. I saw the oyster po boy sandwich, and the fried chicken looked like it was out of this world.

You can sit outside under the tent with your dog, and the house chickens. I brought Frida with us today. The ambience alone is worth the trip, good beers, great old food signs, and the service was right on point. A wonderful place. Go....As you pull out of the diner back onto Hwy. 12 the house across the street has a big piece sign on it.

Today is May 1st, also known as May Day, the International Workers holiday that was started right here in the US of A, and it is also Frida and Che's birthday. May day was a big holiday when we grew up. You would dance around the May pole, the whole nine yards. There were picnics if it was on a weekend. No one cares about the "working class" anymore unless there's a protest somewhere. You won't see or hear anything on any mainstream media today about the struggle of the working class in America.

It was a day where a lot of crap went wrong, but it turned out to be all right in the end. I've got to bring my camera with me more often.

That's it.

2 More Classes

Even an old guy can feel like a kid if he's been taking classes at a college in the spring semester. It's in the low 80's today, and who the hell would wants to go to school?

When I was at St. Gregory the Great school in Danbury I would just stare out the window and look at spring and the outdoor all around me, day dreaming about playing baseball or hanging out in the woods with my dog Lightbulb. Knowing that summer was right there, and it would be long days at the lake, fishing, swimming, raiding fruit stands late at night. Too much temptation to contemplate studies.

There's too much to be done now to spend a lot of effort blogging. My blogging has become a journal of what I eat daily and my exercise routine.  I'm cooking a ton of food, but I don't have the time to write about it.  If I'm cooking a lot then I'm eating well, and if I'm working a lot I'm being productive and that's all positive.

I really started this blog to journal my weight loss.

When it's hot like this I think about ice cream, but ice cream doesn't cool you off actually. It's all the things I need to stay away from sugar, salt and fat. I've had ice cream twice since mid November. I can't believe it.

That's it.
