School Days Again

It's back to school week. I started one class in Bizerkeley this Tue. and another one today at Laney College in Oakland. The vibe in Berkeley is bizarre as usual. These kids all look alike to me. The same uniform with the head phones, the ipod, and the latest Samsung/Apple cell phones. Hooked up to the FEED. There doesn't appear to be much individuality.

This one class I'm taking is a writing class. There's no lap top computers. The teacher is cool with handwritten homework, including mid terms and finals. I think the students are a little dumfounded because of the lack of technology in this class besides the power point presentations she gives.

One of the things I've always liked about community college is you get the same level of eduction as you would if you went to a state school or a private school for that matter. The teachers are highly qualified and often teach the same identical classes at "better" schools.

On top of all that it cost a fraction of the price. The same level of education for less. Hard to go wrong with that formula.

I remember when I was in 3rd semester at culinary school and I was working at Oakville Grocery there was this hot shot who had just graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and he kept saying crap like at the CIA we did this and that, bla, bla, bla. One day I just got tired of his bullshit and said "Isn't it interesting how you and your 30 K education and me with my $800.00 education ($13.00 a unit) are working at the same place." He never mouthed off about the CIA again.

Laney College has an excellent culinary program also. They have trade course, welding, carpentry, electrician. They have a rocking arts department, physical education, you name it, they got it. Why waste money at a state school when you can get you AA or AS for less and then get you BA or BS somewhere else. If I had a child that would be the route they'd be going for sure.

I haven't done two classes a semester and worked full-time in almost twenty years, so this should be interesting.

That's it.
